BreakBread Literacy Project 

BreakBread Literacy Project is the vision of W. David Hall, writer and educator. After many years of leading the Young Writers Workshop at the Kenyon Review, teaching high school, and publishing his own writing, David founded BreakBread Literacy Project: a series of linked programs dedicated to cultivating creatives under the age of 25. 

BreakBread Literacy Project opens doors for young creatives by teaching writing as a means of self-expression and self-determination, and training youth to envision art as a tool for social justice and systemic change. BreakBread provides a community where young creatives’ work can take root and grow through four initiatives: 

● BreakBread Magazine: groundbreaking new work from young creatives
● BreakBread Reading Series: Community reading events for young voices in literature
● BreakBread Creative Classroom: Free creative writing workshops for young creatives
● BreakBread Literary Apprentices: Publishing internships for artists, writers & editors 

BreakBread seeks to change the face of publishing by bringing literary life to young creatives, especially those who have limited access to publishing centers and/or lack the resources to participate in summer writing camps and extracurricular programs. 

BreakBread Literacy Project provides open access to young creatives: all our events, publications, and apprenticeships are free. BreakBread does not charge submission fees. We host open studio workshops where young writers and poets can talk 1:1 with our editors about work-in-progress. We will mail a free copy of BreakBread Magazine to any U.S.-based high school student, youth advocate, classroom teacher, foster care/ group home, shelter or youth detention center upon request. Our online magazine will never have a paywall. By providing mentorship, instruction, and access to high-quality literary experiences, we seek to level the playing field and change the face of literary publishing, one young writer at a time.
